OUK and Makueni County Partner to Enhance Nursing Education and Healthcare Training

The Open University of Kenya (OUK) successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Makueni County on April 2, 2025 to support the Bachelor of Science in Nursing RN-BScN) programme, enabling OUK nursing students to access all the health facilities in the County for their clinical experience. The OUK delegation, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga, received a warm welcome from Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior and other County officials. During the event, OUK presented an overview of its academic programmes, with the Vice-Chancellor highlighting the Undergraduate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, PhD programmes and Professional Development (PD) courses offered by the University. Among these, two PD courses—Mental Health Awareness and Business Modelling for Entrepreneurs—are offered free of charge.

This collaboration has opened doors for additional partnerships in various areas, including research, capacity building for County staff through the Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability as well as Induction, Supervisory Skills, Senior Management and Strategic Leadership Development programmes. The Governor agreed to have the community health practitioners in the County enrol, as a first step, to the two free courses. The team also discussed about establishing innovation hubs to support innovation.

Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor were Prof. Carolyne Omulando (DVC, Academic Affairs), Dr. Catherine Kagucia (Registrar, Academic Affairs), Ms. Elizabeth Kalekye (Programs Manager) and Mr. Amos Musili (Senior Administration Officer). Representing Makueni County were Dr. Paul Musila (CECM, Health Services), Dr. Geoffrey Ngivi (Chief Officer, Health Services), Dr. Stephen Mwatha (Director, Health Services – Partnerships), Ms. Everline Mutanu (Communications Officer), Ms. Rose Ndanu (County HIV Programme Coordinator) and Dr. Caroline Kaeni (Research Focal Person). This partnership marks a significant step in strengthening healthcare education and leadership development in the region.
