OUK launches Formation of Alumni Association to strengthen University Legacy

A Milestone for the Open University of Kenya

03-04-2025 Konza Technopolis, Kenya – The Open University of Kenya (OUK) has officially launched the formation of its Alumni Association, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the university’s legacy and fostering a sense of community among its graduates.

Alumni as Brand Ambassadors

Speaking at the launch event held at Konza Technopolis, OUK Vice Chancellor Professor Elijah Omwenga urged the alumni to be brand ambassadors of the institution and uphold its good name wherever they go. He emphasized that the alumni have a unique platform to further the cause of students and support the university’s growth.

“As the first graduates of the university, you carry the vision of this academic family. You have a heavy responsibility to set the foundation for the future generations of OUK,” said Professor Omwenga. “We are making history, and you are part of it.”

Challenges and Opportunities in Forming an Alumni Association

Professor Omwenga, who successfully initiated the formation of the Kabianga Alumni Association in 2021, acknowledged the challenges that come with establishing such a group. He noted that the process involves legal procedures, organizational structuring, and commitment from members. However, he encouraged the alumni to utilize the association to mobilize resources that could benefit both the members and the university.

Recognition of the First Cohort

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Carolyne Omulando, commended the inaugural cohort for their resilience and commitment to academic excellence. “We recognize and thank our first cohort for the resilience that was seen in their pursuit of additional knowledge from our programmes. You walked with us in the journey from the onset, setting a good culture for the subsequent cohorts,” stated Professor Omulando.

Commitment to Lifelong Learning

On his part, OUK Deputy Vice Chancellor for Planning and Infrastructure, Professor Christopher Chepken, reiterated the university’s commitment to providing quality education. He urged the alumni to consider furthering their education to enhance their career prospects and employability.

“The Open University of Kenya is a premier institution, and we encourage you to continue advancing your knowledge and skills. Lifelong learning is key to career progression and staying competitive in the job market,” he said.

Building a Strong Alumni Network

The launch of the OUK Alumni Association is expected to create a strong network of former students, facilitating professional growth, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration. It also signifies the university’s dedication to building an engaged and supportive alumni community that contributes to the institution’s long-term success.
